Audra slipped from Damon’s arms, and he looked at her through half-closed eyes.

“Are you leaving?” His voice was soft but deepened by sleep.

“I’m staying. I’m going to the bathroom,” Audra whispered.

“Hurry back,” he mumbled, fluffing the pillow before settling back down.

She smiled to herself. She could be a bit clingy, so it was nice to be needed and desired. His Hurry back confirmed he enjoyed cuddling and being close to her as much as she enjoyed cuddling and being close to him.

Audra took her phone into the bathroom to call her mother and let her know she wouldn’t be coming home. She turned on the light and squinted against the sudden glare. Checking the mirror, she was startled to see her appearance—tousled hair, swollen lips, and sex-drunk eyes.

“You look a mess, girl,” she whispered, giggling.

She was still amazed that this was the first time she and Damon had made love. They’d taken their time and gotten to know each other, and now… now she was on cloud nine and as giddy as a toddler with a fistful of candy.

That’s what being with a good man did to you. This was happiness. This was a healthy relationship. She wasn’t the only one making the effort. Damon was too.

She dialed and waited for her mother to pick up.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Mom. I… I won’t be home tonight.” She winced as she waited for the response.

“Okay.” Rose drew the word out into two long syllables. “You’re with Damon, I take it?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Leaning her back against the wall, Audra waited with a tight belly for the words that would dull her excitement. She hadn’t exactly been a model daughter in the past. She’d had moments of rebellion and poor decision-making, including a run-in with the law once that had left her parents furious. To this day, she was surprised they didn’t kill her.

They hadn’t approved of Kerry, and when she ended up pregnant, their disappointment had been palpable. She knew, however, that they were the only people who came close to loving Kerilyn as much as she did.

“That’s not a problem, I can watch her. She can keep me company while your father is out of town.”

“Thanks, Mom.”

“You’re welcome, honey.” Pause. “Be careful.”

She added the warning in a lowered voice, as if she didn’t really want to say it but couldn’t stop herself.

Be careful.

Of what? Falling in love? Getting hurt? Making another mistake?

Audra wasn’t worried. She’d had her doubts in the beginning, but Damon was right—he was different. Nothing like her ex.

“He’s different, Mom. One day, I’ll bring him over so you can meet him.”

“We’d all love to meet him,” her mother said.

“I’ll plan for it one day, when he’s not so busy. Can I speak to Keri for a sec?”

When Kerilyn came on the line, Audra explained to her daughter that she was going to stay out all night. Her daughter had a lot of questions, to which she explained that she was at a sleepover with a friend—the way Kerilyn sometimes had sleepovers with her cousins.
